Physical and chemistry properties and Dynamics of magmas

Presentation :

In this program, magmas are mainly considered with reference to active volcanism. A first field of research adresses crustal storage and magma differentiation processes, a major goal being to obtain quantitative assessment of their pre-eruptive conditions (T, P, volatile content, oxygen fugacity). A second field deals with the degassing processes in magmas upon ascent and eruption, i.e. bubble growth and coalescence, microlite crystallization, variations in rheology and vapor phase composition, or the influence of magma flow deformation. Implications for volcanic hazard assessment are of concern in these studies .
